What coffee cup reading is
Tasseography, reading patterns in tea leaves, wine sediment or coffee grounds, has parallel traditions across many cultures. The Turkish and Middle Eastern version is built around unfiltered coffee: after drinking, the cup is turned over onto its saucer, left to cool, and the shapes left by the grounds are read.
How the shapes are interpreted
Readers look for recognisable shapes (a bird, a heart, a ring, a mountain), their position in the cup (near the rim for the near future, near the base for what is more distant or more fixed), and the overall density and flow of the grounds.

Does the coffee need to be a specific type?
Traditional readings use unfiltered, finely ground Turkish or Arabic-style coffee, since the sediment is what forms the shapes. Filtered coffee will not leave usable grounds.
How long should I wait before photographing the cup?
A few minutes after turning the cup over onto the saucer, enough for the grounds to set and the shapes to stabilise.
Is this the same as tea leaf reading?
